This island is 57km long, 23km wide in the widest point, and yet the total levadas network extends over 2150km! (There are no errors on the number!) some levadas are also used to power hydroelectric plants. Finally, there are levadas a mountainside, carved into the rock: no path has been built next to the canal. The only solution is to walk to the waterfront on the section where the path is missing!

Each levada is bordered by a hiking trail, originally used for the maintenance of channels. These trails that hug the contours of the mountains are relatively flat and are now used for tourism. Indeed, it is quite pleasant to walk, it allows you to discover the richness of plant species.

There are many waterfalls on the island. This one is located on the busy levada 'fountains of 25', one of the most beautiful walks in Madeira.

Sao Lourenco peninsula is a nature reserve located at the eastern end of Madeira. It is the only natural sand beach on the island. Indeed, young Madeira is an island on which the sand has not had time to train! A tourist purposes, a beach of white sand (imported from Morocco) was built in Calheta.

This point situated at the extremity of the island east is the opposite of what we have seen until now: very mineral, dry and at the same time shipping. Can be seen on the cliffs of successive strata and volcanic vents, which reflect the geological and volcanic activity (completed) of the island. This is a paradise for lovers of geology!

Levada is an irrigation canal, or aqueduct. They were created from the sixteenth century to carry water across the island to irrigate crops. Indeed, it rains a lot on the northwest of the island, while the south-east slope is much drier, but the sunshine allows agriculture to better develop. Madeira Island is mountainous, many had to dig tunnels (about 40km) in the construction of levadas, often with very basic tools, consisting of a hammer and chisel...

Madeira wine was discovered by chance: the English grape juice mixed with alcohol from cane sugar to enhance its preservation during navigation. Stored in the holds of ships overheated and agitated for weeks at sea, he acquired remarkable qualities dégustatives. We then tried to reproduce this wine on the mainland. In the same shop, we tasted a delicious cake cane sugar syrup, spices and dried fruit: a treat!

The embroideries are hand made by women since the late 18th century. They produce embroidery on fabric that will be used to sew shirts, bed sheets, handkerchiefs, tablecloths... Madeira embroidery is recognized worldwide, she has received numerous awards. It is very sophisticated and expensive!

This indoor market on two floors sells fruit (mini banana, pineapple, passion fruit, passion fruit... ) and colorful flowers and exotic (Ethiopia arum flower of paradise... ). Its name in Portuguese, 'Mercado dos Lavradores' means 'market workers colorful'. In fact, sellers have easy contact and are friendly.
